Intoduction

A Last Will is an optional message of up to two lines that a player may write at any time prior to his death, which is displayed to the Town after the player's death. In the event that the player is night killed, his Last Will is displayed during the beginning of the next day as part of the game's recap of players who were killed that night. If a player is lynched, his Last Will is immediately displayed after his execution, right at the end of the day.

Players are able to create and edit their Last Will by using -lw command, which opens up a screen with two text boxes where a Last Will may be written. Pressing the green button at the bottom of the window allows a player to save his Last Will. In the past, players could type their Last Wills directly in the command line (e.g. -lw [my last will]), but this no longer works in the current version of the game -- the text boxes must be using after simply typing -lw.

In terms of strategy, Last Wills heavily favor the Town in most situations and therefore, it is generally recommended that Town players keep a Last Will listing their night actions and any other information they believe the Town should know if they die -- i.e. if they believe a certain player must be Town, scum, or some other role. Neutral or Mafia / Triad players can also leave Last Wills, but usually the Town will be hesitant to believe them, with some limited exceptions -- for example, a Godfather identifying the Serial Killer in his Last Will may be viewed as credible since both the Town and the Mafia are opposed to Neutral Killing roles like a Serial Killer.

Finally, the Mafia / Triad have a role, the Janitor / Incense Master, which will prevent a player's Last Will from being reveal upon that player's death. This can be a powerful ability, especially if the killed Town player was an investigative role and had left important information in his Last Will. The Mafia / Traid's Disguiser / Informant role also has the ability to prevent a player's Last Will from being revealed in connection with killing that player and stealing his identity.

Applicable Situations

Last Wills are applicable to almost all roles, except for Neutral roles that include survival as a victory condition (unless the Neutral player is feeling especially generous to a particular side). Investigative roles (Sheriff, Investigator, Jailor, and so on) benefit immensely from Last Wills.

Role Purpose / Tips
Sheriff Revealing all his findings
  • Sheriffs should record their Night Feedback (a list of which players they have checked at night and the results of their investigations) in a Last Will.
  • If a Sheriff does not do so and dies, the Town will be deprived of all this information and will usually have a much more difficult time winning the game.
  • In the current meta, a Sheriff who does not record his findings in a Last Will would be considered extremely poor play.
Investigator Uncertain findings
  • Similarly, Investigators should record his Night Feedback in a Last Will as well.
  • If an Investigator does not do so and dies, the Town will be deprived of all this information and will usually have a much more difficult time winning the game.
  • In the current meta, an Investigator who does not record his findings in a Last Will would be considered extremely poor play.
Mason Revealing other Masons
  • Revealing the other Masons in a Last Will not only provides the Town with more clear roles, but also greatly limits the False Claiming ability of the Mafia / Triad.
  • However, it is best to not reveal this information too early in the game, because it can provide the Mafia or Cult with valuable information on a confirmed Town member to kill (Mafia) or avoid (Cult).
  • The current meta is mixed on whether Masons should reveal their allies -- it is largely situational depending on the nature of the setup and point in the game.
Escort Blocking killers
  • As a Escort, you should record in your Last Will who you have blocked and when.
  • If you roleblocked someone on a particular night where there were no kills, you can reveal your suspicion to the Town that you blocked a killing role.
  • However, you do not necessarily want to reveal this information too early, in case it is incorrect and because it will make you a target for the Mafia / Triad / Neutral Killer.
  • Sometimes, this information may be more important in the later game as well, so making a Last Will is sometimes the best way to get the information out to the Town.
  • In the current meta, Escorts are highly recommended to record their roleblocking visits, because they be may be able to be combined with another Town member's information to identify members of the Mafia / Triad.
Any Mafia Expecting to die soon
  • A Mafia player either: (1) may try to implicate innocent players in their Last Will to get those players lynched, or knowing the Town may realize this, (2) may put the actual Mafia players in his Last Will to make them appear clean forcing a WIFOM situation.
  • In the current meta, this tactic is somewhat disfavored unless very carefully executed. The Town may believe that the lynched Mafia was gamethrowing out of anger and its attention may be drawn to checking the implicated players. Therefore, many Town players choose not to believe anything left by a Mafia member in his Last Will.
Disguiser Faking clues
  • If the option "Cleans the target's role" is NOT enabled. The Disguiser's own Last Will be left with his older name's dead body.
  • Making for some interesting ways of getting Town to lynch people, for example disguising as a Sheriff and leaving a fake Last Will saying someone is evil.

Advantages

  • Allows a large amount of important information to be communicated at the last possible moment.
  • Can easily win many games if used correctly.

Disadvantages

  • May reveal important (and vulnerable) Town roles, quickly getting them killed.
  • May throw suspicion on innocent players.
  • This strategy can be nullified by a Janitor.

Notes

  • It is recommended not to use the < symbol in a Last Will, because copy-pasting the Last Will to the chat will make it not appear. This is because the < symbol is used for color coding.

  • Having an easily readable and understandable format can be very important. Examples:
